International Organizations in Nagoya - USA, Austalia, New Zealand and Canada

Whether you are a business person or expat who is living in the Nagoya area, an English teacher looking to explore other opportunities or just someone who is looking to interact with other foreigners from several different countries, there are 3 organizations that you should consider joining or attending their events.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ)

The American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) is the oldest and largest foreigner organization in Japan that began in 1948 and currently boasts 3,000 individual members and 1,300 companies.

The ACCJ has an active presence in the Nagoya area that focuses primarily on business issues and activities through the hosting of monthly events that allow attendees to network with other business people while learning more about how to do business in Japan. In addition, members receive a listing of all other members, a monthly magazine and opportunities to pursue employment opportunities posted on their website.

The ACCJ Chubu Chapter is also renowned in the organization for hosting the largest foreigner charity event in Japan with its annual Walkathon event in May each year that raises money for local charities in the Nagoya region. Now in its 18th year, the Walkathon is also a fixture in the Kansai and Kanto chapters of the organization.

The Australian New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ANZCCJ)

The Australian New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ANZCCJ) began in 1991 and currently has a membership of about 400. With a mandate to strengthen the business and cultural ties between Australia, New Zealand and Japan, the local organization in Nagoya often hosts business and social related events for its members and non-members. The ANZCCJ offers opportunities to network with other Aussies, Kiwis and Japanese to forge business relationships and enjoy cultural activities of their respective countries.

Tokai Canada Japan Society (TJCS)

Despite being the new kids on the block, the Tokai Canada Japan Society (TJCS) is working hard to be different and open to all, a distinctly Canadian trait. Focusing more on social events than stuffy suit and tie events, the TJCS is quickly becoming known as the organization of "fun" in the Nagoya area. From its monthly TGIF at MYBAR, street hockey drop in event, and seasonal events that include a hanami party, hanabi party and its Canada Day party at Canada House (the residence of the Consul General of Japan in Nagoya) there is something for everyone Canadian, Japanese and of any country to enjoy.

Another much anticipated event of the TJCS each year is the annual camping and rafting trip in September that should not be missed if you are looking to get out of the concrete jungle that is Nagoya to enjoy the splendour of Japanese nature.

Community Ties

Every year the ACCJ and TJCS host the largest and grandest international event in Nagoya in November called the Champagne Ball. Now in its fourth year the event attracts over 350 people to a night of great food, fun and entertainment. It also allows the two organizations to publicly recognize the people that drive both organizations as well as to recognize a local unsung hero who makes a difference in the Nagoya area.

As expected due to the objectives of each organization, the membership fees are greatest with the ACCJ followed by the ANZCCJ and TJCS, respectively. To learn more about these three worthy organizations, please visit www.accj.or.jp, www.anzccj.jp and www.tjcs.jp.
